Pond provided comprehensive design, permitting, and construction administration services for a crucial trail project connecting the south campus of the University of Georgia with the newest segment of the North Oconee River Greenway.
The trail stretches a quarter of a mile with a 10-foot-wide concrete path, an elevated concrete trail, and a 240-foot-long steel truss prefabricated bridge. This project significantly improved alternative and safe commuting routes for students, professors, and staff by establishing a dedicated link to the UGA East Campus from the Athens-Clarke County Greenway system.
Despite its brevity, the project presented unique challenges as it lies entirely within the Oconee River floodplain, within a substantial floodway, and in close proximity to a DOT bridge. Designing the elevated structure to mitigate FEMA flood elevation impacts while ensuring accessibility for emergency and maintenance vehicles posed critical design challenges.
